FreeMax Starre Mini – “We never stop there”

It is under this motto that you could read in the headline of the review that a new atomizer from the FreeMax company was born, which became a little smaller, but a little better and a bit more modern than the usual mode. I am sure that most of you are already very familiar with the Starre model and those who used this model did not really like the removable evaporators, and the manufacturer apparently listened to the vapers and introduced a new atomizer with a serviced platform with velocity format adjustable air flow and ease of use.

FreeMax Starre Mini - We never stop there

FreeMax Starre Mini - We never stop there

The main features of the atomizer:

1) Manufacturer – FreeMax;
2) Type – mini RDTA;
3) Made of stainless steel;
4) Tank capacity – 2 ml (there is a 5 ml version);
5) The diameter of the model – 22mm;
6) Borosilicate glass tank;
7) Adjustable pin connector;
8) Racks of “Velocity” format with large openings for coils;
9) Adjustable airflow;
10) Fully collapsible design.

FreeMax Starre Mini - We never stop there

Unlike the first model, the FreeMax Starre Mini RDTAIt is a compact device with a capacity of 2 ml. The capacity of the tank is probably the most controversial point, since today such a supply of liquid on modern and powerful devices will be enough for just a few puffs, but the manufacturer did so and there’s nothing to be done about it. Appearance at the same time simple and at the same time strict, nothing superfluous to distract from the process of soaring. Pin connector is very easy to adjust, this is also a small problem, as it can simply loosen and lose contact. The upper refueling occurs within a few seconds and this probably crosses out the lack of tank capacity. Each part of the atomizer perfectly fits with each other, everything sits firmly and securely, a tank of borosilicate glass of good thickness, complete with a spare tank. Drip type though stainless steel but with a delrin insert that minimizes the amount of heat that reaches your lips, it can be replaced with any similar drip type from your collection. Atomizer has two fully adjustable airflow holes “Cyclops format”. The adjustable ring works well, the stroke is not too loose and not too tight, which allows fine adjustment of the air supply to the chamber being serviced.

FreeMax Starre Mini - We never stop there

FreeMax Starre Mini - We never stop there

If you have already dealt with the “Velocity” serviced site, then you will surely have no difficulty in servicing and this atomizer is very simple, reliable and productive. The ability to install two spirals allows you to get maximum satisfaction in the process of soaring. Screws with excellent thread, wide holes, the only problem you may encounter in the process of servicing the atomizer is the limited amount of clearance for installing the spirals, although servicing the atomizer several times can be used to this.

FreeMax Starre Mini - We never stop there

FreeMax Starre Mini - We never stop there

As a conclusion. In terms of processing, ease of use, performance and price, the Freemax Starre Mini RDTAis a useful device that simply must be in the collection of each vaper. Among the shortcomings, we single out only the capacity (2 ml) and the weak thread of the pin connector, while all other parameters remain at a height. All thick and tasty!

IJOY CAPTAIN RTA REVIEW

FIRST IMPRESSION OUT OF THE BOX:

The first impression on the Ijoy Captain RTA is that it looks eerily similar to the slider tank that they sent me. Packaging is like most Ijoy tanks. It’s in a clear jewel type of box with everything on one tier. So far, I would have to say that it looks pretty good and if it vapes as well as the Captain S Sub ohm tank, this should be one hell of an RTA.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX:

  • 1x Captain RTA
  • 1x screwdriver
  • 1x extra glass
  • 1x tool pack (O-rings, screws, coils, Japanese Organic Cotton)
  • 1x 510 adaptor
  • 1x warranty card

iJoy Captain RTA Review

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

Just like the Captain S Sub ohm tank, the RTA has a slider style top. Ijoy has included a really nice Ultem chuff cap style drip tip. The drip tip is extremely comfortable and it has two rings on the bottom of it. I like the way it looks aesthetically on the tank and I love the way it performs. I’m actually kind of sad that they only included one. While it is not a proper Goon drip tip, it is 810 compatible. All of your Smok Beast line drip tips will fit as well. There is also a 510 drip tip adapter so you can run all of your 510 drip tips, too.

iJoy Captain RTA Review

Slide the top cap open and just like previous versions of this tank, you will see a kidney bean shaped fill port. Just like the S, it is a little small and I would rather it have been just a bit bigger. There is a rubber gasket around the fill port. Ijoy has also included an extra gasket for when this one wears thin. It will accommodate most juice bottles but with the chubby gorilla bottles, you may have to remove the drip tip to fill.

iJoy Captain RTA Review

Right below the top cap, we have the glass section and it is held in place by two nice o’rings. On the interior of the tank, the chimney is definitely on the wide side. The chimney does feed into a barrel that has an extremely conical design to it. The barrel does have four wicking ports that line up with for wicking ports on the deck itself. This tank does have juice flow control. The JFC is smooth but it definitely works better with the tank on a mod.

iJoy Captain RTA Review

The base on the Captain RTA is done a little differently than most RTA’s. It acts more like a ring than a base. What I mean by that is the deck actually separates from the base. So the base actually forms a ring around the 510 pin of the deck and that’s how you secure the deck to the tank. In other words, the base when taken off just has a hole in it with no 510. On the bottom of the base, you will find some Captain branding with the words designed by Ijoy. The knurling on the base is pretty good and it does provide a nice grip for when you need to access your deck.

iJoy Captain RTA Review

As with all the tanks in the Captain line, between the base and the glass, there is a significant cut out going around the whole tank. This is supposed to help with heat transfer. I do have to say that it does do a wonderful job in that area. I can chain vape this tank all day and it may get a little warm but it gets nowhere near as hot as some of my other tanks do with the same amount of vaping. It’s a nice simple design that is beautifully executed on this tank. Well done, Ijoy.

THE DECK:

The deck on this RTA is gold plated and it does have two types of air flow. You have airflow that comes directly underneath the coil and then there are some side airflow slots that grab air from the side of the coil. We have seen this before on other decks and it does seem to be a really good way to get the most flavor out of an atomizer. As I said before, the deck is removable. I am truly hoping that the reason Ijoy made it removable is that they are developing different configurations that can be used in this RTA. I would love to see a velocity style deck and a dedicated single coil deck. That would be just fantastic.

iJoy Captain RTA Review

The deck has a small oring going around the base right underneath the juice ports. That’s what holds the deck in place on the barrel. Below the oring and underneath the platform of the deck, you will find two airflow holes. One of the places that this deck gets its air flow from is directly under the coils. There is also a hole right underneath the two side pieces that grab the airflow from the side. You would think this tank would have a ton of airflow but in reality, it does not. Below the airflow holes, there is another o’ring that secures the 510 pin to the interior of the base. Below that, you have the actual 510 pin. The threading on the pin is nice and smooth and so far this atomizer has sat flush on all the mods that I have used it on. The pin itself is gold plated as is the whole deck. The pin does have a flat head adjustment to it and an insulator ring around it. All in all, this is a very well thought out deck.

BUILDING AND WICKING:

Because of the way this deck comes out of the base, it could be a little intimidating for the new user. There really is no need to be intimidated because this deck is easy to build and wick. It is your typical postless deck and as is the case with most postless decks, the hardest part about building it is getting your leads to the correct length. I always suggest to my readers that they just take their time and clip a little bit at a time.

Once you get the correct lead length, you simply mount your coils and tighten them up. Make sure that your coils are sitting just above the side airflow on this deck. You want the side airflow to grab the vapor from the bottom half of your coil. Do that and you will be rewarded with great flavor. Next, you wick up your coils and make sure you place them into the juice ports. I can’t stress this enough, you cannot stuff the cotton into the juice ports. You have to make sure that you place them in there gently and that they have enough room to wick freely. If you stuff them in, you will wind up with dry hits and your cotton will just not keep up. This is not the case with just this RTA but with any RTA that wicks this way. Once that is done, you are ready to do juice up your cotton and put your deck back in the tank.

Putting the deck back in the tank is pretty simple. It’s very much like the drop-in style of coil that the Captain S uses. You can line up your juice holes with your holes on the barrel, push the deck in, and simply put your base on. Once your base is on securely, you can screw it into your deck to insure that the deck is not going anywhere. Now you are ready to vape. It really is that simple and easy.

HOW DOES IT VAPE?

So far, every tank I’ve gotten from the Ijoy Captain line has been fantastic and the RTA is no different. I think what I like most about the Captain line of tanks is the restrictiveness on the airflow. Don’t get me wrong, this is no MTL tank with a super tight draw. It is a very nice restrictive lung hit. That is the type of vape that I really, truly enjoy. For me, Ijoy has just nailed the airflow on all of their Captain line tanks. Right now, I have dual twisted SS coils in there ohming out at .14 at 85 watts, in temperature control mode. I have this beautiful tank on my brand new Aleader Funky 160 and the vape I get is just superb. The clouds I get are pretty good but the flavor, the flavor is just really there. This is the type of tank that is just right up my alley. It has the perfect amount of airflow restriction, on point flavor, and the clouds are not bad either. If you put a gun to my head though, I would have to tell you that this is a flavor first RTA. Not saying that it chuck the clouds but the flavor is priority one with the Captain RTA and that is exactly the way I like it.

CONCLUSION:

Well, what can I say? I’ve owned every tank in the Ijoy Captain line and so far I have yet to be disappointed. The Captain RTA is definitely no different. It will satisfy the flavor chaser in you, it’s simple to build and wick, and it has just the right amount of restrictiveness to it. I do have a pre-release version but I do see this tank being very popular. I am assuming that’s why Ijoy built the deck the way they did. This tank definitely needs some more deck configurations and it will be a total home run for Ijoy. If you are a flavor-first vaper, definitely go out and pick yourself up a Captain RTA.

CoilArt Mage GTA Review

CoilArt Mage GTA Review

Mage GTA By CoilArt Review

CoilArt is back again with a new atomizer in the MAGE family. Earlier in the year, CoilArt released the MAGE RTA to the market and it was received with open arms due to it’s remarkable performance and small form factor. The Chinese based company has now released a new follow up to the RTA, called the MAGE GTA. Jumping on the bandwagon of returning to single coil atomizers, which we have seen a fair bit of lately, CoilArt have offered their take on this for us enjoy. Thanks to CoilArt for providing the Mage GTA for review here on Vaping Cheap.

GTA stands for Genesis Tank Atomizer which are also lovingly referred to a Genny by those are familiar with their history. Although it’s not a traditional Genny in the true sense of the word, the principle for how it operates is very similar. A Genesis tank relies on having a long wick that feeds a coil that is close to the mouthpiece. This principal, of having the chamber as high as possible, has proven to give an enhanced flavor concentration due to close proximity.

What’s in the Box?

  • 1x Mage GTA
  • 1x Replacement Glass
  • 1x Accessories Bag

Out of the Box

Again, a sterling effort from CoilArt on their packaging! As with every other product they have released the Mage GTA box is delightful. Opting this time for a box that slides out from an outer wrap – with a faux carbon fibre look on the packaging. On first inspection of the atomizer, it looks really nice and has a tight compact form factor. The nice lines and sleek aesthetics really shine on all of the CoilArt products and this one doesn’t disappoint either. This is one sexy looking tank!

The MAGE GTA holds a lot of resemblance to it’s brother the MAGE RTA, but appears to have a few more surprises in hand. Topping off the tank, there is a chuff style drip tip/top cap which can be interchanged with the RTA style if you prefer that. I know CoilArt sells these separately as spare parts in a few different colors. Underneath this, are the same kidney shaped fill holes and the chamber/chimney section is attached as one piece. The glass section is slightly bigger than the RTA, however it is held in by the same style of o-rings which are customizable in color with replacements in the spares bag. This means that glass tank is not able to be replaced with the MAGE RTA. The base shares the exact same airflow adjustment and three cyclops shaped air holes as the RTA.

CoilArt Mage GTA Review

This brings us to the build deck and oh my what a pretty deck she is – plated with 24k gold. We see a similar deck design to the serpent mini, although here we have much more room to play with. This design is primarily aimed for single coil builds, however I am sure if you wanted to get creative you could come up with many options – there is certainly enough room to do so. Two offset post clamps are utilized with horizontal grub screws in between which the coils are secured. The grub screws are phillips head and can be adjusted with the included screw driver. There are wicking slots on either side that sit between the threads, which appear to be size-able enough to accommodate a fair amount of wicking material.

Finally on the bottom we see an adjustable 510 connection. This is the first adjustable 510 I’ve seen with a phillips head notch in it, which is a nice touch. It can be used with a traditional flat head screwdriver, however the phillips head will give more leverage whilst adjusting and less likely strip out. This 510 connection also happens protrude more than others I have seen to date.

The rest of the box contains a spare glass section, two sets of colored o-rings, some spare grub screws, a screwdriver, an instruction card and a vape band.

I was highly impressed with the build quality of this tank. All parts fit together nicely, there are not any loose threads or janky parts. The machining quality is top notch and I did not detect any reminiscence of machine oil on inspection.

Usage

Getting down to building, I found installing my coils a very simple straight forward task. Being a single coil tank, there was no battling with dual coils and having to get them perfectly positioned. It was simply a case of centering the coil over the large air hole and clamping each post down. For thinner coils, I would recommend ensuring that the coil ends are directly in the middle of the grub screw and the post to ensure a solid connection. For larger builds, I found that they still work fine if they sit below the grub screw as well as directly in the middle. Due to the huge amount of real estate available on the build deck, you can comfortably fit coils of up to 3.5mm diameter if you so choose to.

Wicking was again straight forward and very hard to get wrong. Once you feed your wick through the coil, you can train each end down through the wick slots to get an idea of where to trim it. I’ve had good results trimming the wick either just below the bottom of the wick slots or all the way down to the bottom of the reservoir. It’s best to experiment with this according to your coil build, wicking material and VG% of your e-liquid. When your happy with where you wick is sitting, make sure that it is tucked into the wicking slots clear of the thread to ensure that it doesn’t get caught up when you screw the top down.

CoilArt Mage GTA Review

Filling the MAGE GTA through the top kidney shaped fill holes appears to be an easy task. It does require some attention though, as this is the part that has a few quirks to it. When filling, I recommend doing so slowly, as a quick injection of e-liquid may cause it to be forced up the wicking slots, through the air intake and out the air holes. So take your time and give it an even fill, while watching the juice settle in place. Due to the large chamber section, there is not much clearance to the glass and this causes air bubbles. You have to wait for the air bubbles to clear before you can fill the tank up fully. The air bubbles do come back during the course of normal vaping, but if monitored they do not affect the performance of this tank. More on this later.

The chuff like drip tip is very comfortable to use and the bore seems wide enough to compliment the airflow design of the tank. The pure shape of the drip tip makes it much easier to loosen than on the RTA, which was previously sloped and hard to get a grip of. You need to be careful when screwing in the topcap because the threads are cut into the delrin and could be easily striped. I recommend turning the cap anti-clock wise first to ensure that it is seated well in the thread before tightening further. You cannot use your own drip tip with this tank, your stuck with either the included topcap or you need to swap it out for the RTA top cap.

The airflow mechanism is super smooth to adjust and very easy to turn. It has just enough resistance to hold it’s place without being a pain to adjust. You can adjust it from fully closed to fully open and anywhere in between. Apart from stopping at either end, there are no stops in between like some attys where the airflow clicks into place. Due to the symmetry of the airflow design, each of the three airflow slots are mirrored all the way round.

Despite the protruding 510 connection, the MAGE GTA fits well on each mod and makes a solid connection. I don’t get any gaps below the atty and every mod I have put it on looks neat. I have not had to adjust the 510 yet, so it seems to be set at the ideal length already.

Performance

The first build I tried in the MAGE GTA was a 3mm spaced 26AWG stainless 316L coil that came in around 0.7 ohms. With wide open airflow, the flavor and vapor production were pretty decent around 40 watts. With the airflow closed about a third of the way, the flavor started to increase. I was pretty impressed with the performance of such an easy straight forward coil build.

Then I stepped up to a fused Clapton, which came in about 0.45 ohms. I found the easiest way to install this was to have the ends of the coils vertical to enable a good connection with the post and grub screw, then reposition the coil in the center and quite close to the airflow. This is where the flavor and vapor production shined. Between 45-50 watts I was getting killer flavor again with about one third of the airflow closed and the clouds were good. I would almost compare the flavor to be on par with the MAGE RTA at this point. I think it all comes down to your coil build, amount of wick and the having the coil quite low and close to the air intake.

CoilArt Mage GTA Review

In comparison to the airflow on the MAGE RTA, I found the GTA to be a little more restrictive. By all means, not a tight draw, but less airy than the RTA none the less. I think this is probably a good thing as this tank can cater for Mouth to Lung style vapers where single coils really come into play.

I didn’t experience any leaking when using this tank, but do be careful as mentioned previously when filling to avoid over filling or quick entry of your e-juice. Wicking kept up well and I didn’t have any dry hits to complain about. Which brings me back to the point about having to monitor the air bubbles in this tank. As mentioned before, this tank is prone to air bubbles. The bubbles seem to occur under the chamber section and you can see the air pockets near the ends of your wick. Although, for me, the wicks stayed saturated – I do imagine for some people who vape heavily that this could cause an issue of e-liquid not saturating the wick, which would in turn lead to dry hits. The air bubbles do dissipate over time and can be quickly rectified by tipping the tank on it’s side. I would have to rate this as a con of the GTA due to it not being 100% hassle free vaping, you are always going to have to the fact that you need to monitor the tank in the back of your mind. I can personally deal with this, however it’s fair enough that others don’t have the time or need to have to worry about this.

As with the MAGE RTA, you cannot take your build deck apart to inspect it without loosing juice. So you have to either vape the tank dry or use a syringe to remove the liquid before disassembling the atty.

Personalizing the MAGE GTA couldn’t be easier. You have different color o-rings included and you can also swap the topcap out to the various color MAGE RTA topcaps for a perfect match. The MAGE GTA is available in both Stainless Steel and Black finishes and they both look great.

To summarize the Pros and Cons for this tank.

Cons

  • You cannot use your own drip tip
  • Top cap threading can strip if you’re not careful
  • You don’t have the ability to inspect your build on the fly, need to empty the tank to rebuild
  • Air bubbles on filling and vaping

Pros

  • Amazing aesthetics and general looks
  • Swap-ability with Mage RTA Top Cap
  • Ability to run on a less powerful mod due to single coil
  • Ease of use

If you are a single coil fan and wanted to try one of the CoilArt tanks, this would be hard walk past. CoilArt provide really good quality products for the price point, so you won’t be disappointed on either account. I don’t hesitate to recommend the MAGE GTA for it’s performance and flavor qualities.

Cobra RTA by Asvape – unsupervised fluid delivery

If you have not heard of Asvape , you should not worry about it, because you are definitely not the only one. My own knowledge in the history of the company ends with Strider boxing mode presented by the manufacturer in conjunction with VO Tech . Now I also know the tank called Cobra , which appeared in the catalogs of online stores relatively recently. It looks like an ordinary atomizer, yet it has small highlights, which attract attention. Let’s try to formulate an opinion about the new product.

Cobra RTA by Asvape
What I want to immediately note is that without having done anything supernatural, the designers were able to “roll out” a very stylish product that would stand out without any problems among a heap of repetitive competitors. The tank is available in only two color options – black and steel. I singled out for myself the last one, which, in my opinion, is best combined with a gold-colored evaporator.
Cobra RTA by Asvape
There are not so many decorative elements on the case. These can be attributed, perhaps, to small engravings on the case. By the way, I did not find information about how the 1986 figure relates to this device. The only connection I could find was Stallone’s film “Cobra”, released just in 1986. As for the size, everything is more or less standard. Despite the fact that the tank has a rather large diameter of 24 mm, it is only 42.5 mm in height, so the novelty can be called compact.
Cobra RTA by Asvape
Due to some external similarity with atomizers of the Moonshot type , one may get the impression of the great potential of the new product, but in reality everything is much more modest. Asvapepositioning a novelty as a tank for those who are just switching from the most primitive atomizers or to those who need a powerful tank. For advanced vapers, a tank with an evaporator on Ni80 0.5 ohm with recommended power from 35W to 45W is not of particular interest. It’s too early to judge the amount of steam and the taste transfer, but the presence of a standard blower can be considered good news.
Cobra RTA by Asvape

Focus On www.urvapin.com For Best Vape Tanks.

The manufacturer calls the most interesting feature of his device is the design of evaporators. As you can see, the entire evaporator housing is covered with holes of small size, that is, the liquid comes directly from everywhere. According to the manufacturer, this will allow to use liquids with 100% VG on this tank. I don’t see much point in this, but you can count it as a marketing move.
Cobra RTA by Asvape
When I began to get acquainted with the performance characteristics of this tank, I was ready to see the figure of 2 ml in the column capacity of the tank for liquid. In fact, it turned out that Asvape engineers have a conscience, so that a fully filled tank can hold 3.8 ml of liquid. Not to say that this is such a serious indicator, but for a comfortable soaring should be enough.

OBS ENGINE RTA REVIEW

FIRST IMPRESSION OUT OF THE BOX:

Love the color, got the gold one. The Engine does come packaged nicely in a two-tier box. On the front tier, you will see the tank itself, the spare glass, and a screwdriver. On the second tier of the box, there will be an instruction manual and a package with all the goodies and spares. So far, it is impressive looking. It comes out of the box clean and looks to be well built. Let’s wick this thing up and see if it really does live up to the hype.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX:

  • 1 x OBS Engine RTA
  • 1 x Screwdriver
  • 1 x Set of Spare Parts
  • 1 x Replacement Glass
  • 1 x Cotton Pad
  • 2 x Prebuilt Kanthal Coils

OBS Engine RTA Review

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

The drip tip is a 510 drip tip that is seated on a pretty big platform that houses the air flow control. Normally, I absolutely hate top caps like this because of the huge platform. However, in this case, I do understand it from a design standpoint because they did need someplace to house the AFC. The drip tip is very comfortable and I am happy that they decided to use a 510 although I would have preferred an 810 drip tip. Because of the way this tank is designed and the platform that houses the AFC, only certain drip tips will actually look good on the OBS Engine. You need to use drip tips that will either sit flush on top of the platform or have a flattened-out bottom.

OBS Engine RTA Review

The AFC on the Engine is done a little different than most AFC’s I have seen on the tanks coming out today. Most tanks have two airflow slots one on each side. The OBS Engine has three airflow slots each one located a third of the way around the platform. The airflow itself is quite smooth and when you do taper it down, you will experience better flavor. Right below the platform, we have the actual top cap assembly of the OBS Engine. There are some grooves on this part of the tank as well as some OBS branding. Pull this part of the tank up and you will reveal the side fill port. I’ve never been a fan of side fill tanks but to be fair, OBS seems to execute this feature very well on the Engine. Definitely a better design and execution than most side fill ports I have seen. The side fill port is pretty big by most standards and will accommodate all juice bottles including the bullnose type.

Below the whole top cap assembly, we do have the glass section. It does have a sort of caged look to it. The glass actually goes over some nicely machine bars on the interior of the tank. The OBS Engine does have a 5.2 ml capacity. The nice thing about the Engine is it really is not a juice killing tank.

OBS Engine RTA Review

The barrel on the Engine really does not have any sort of conical design. On the bottom of the barrel, there are two notches that will line up with two notches on the base. I’m really disappointed with this notch system. It can be a real pain to get the base on and I really think it could have been done a lot better. The barrel does lead into what I would call a medium bore chimney. It is really not a wide bore chimney but it is not narrow either. Since this tank is a top airflow only tank, the chimney is what you would call a double walled chimney. That is, the airflow comes in through the outer walls, hits the coil, and then the vapor comes out through the inner chimney.

OBS Engine RTA Review

As I said earlier, the base can be a pain in the neck to get it to catch and thread on smoothly. The notch system on this tank is severely lacking and could have been designed a lot better. I think bigger notches would have served this base better because the way it is right now, it can be really tough to line up. Threading on the base itself is really not the greatest and it does seem to be a little bit on the thin and crunchy side. Turn the bass over and you will see the bottom of the tank. There is some OBS branding and a serial number. The 510 pin is gold plated and the threading on that is pretty smooth.

OBS Engine RTA Review

Overall, it’s a decently built tank that probably could have been machined a little better at the base with a better system for putting the base on. I do like the looks of the tank but the base has just been a real pain to use. It’s almost like you have to find the notches and then click the base into place before you can begin screwing it on. Definitely a huge con as far as I’m concerned.

Focus On www.ave40.com For More Vape Tank.

THE DECK:

The deck on the Engine is a typical velocity style deck with grub screws. It is a two-post two-terminal-per-post setup. The post holes are not particularly big and you will have an issue getting flat wire or exotic coil leads in there. I do like the fact that OBS decided to use grub screws on this deck. In my opinion, they are the best type of screws for most applications pertaining to most decks. The grub screws do seem to be of decent quality and I haven’t had any problems with them as of yet. Right below the posts, there is a platform that houses your wicking ports. There are four circular wicking ports that you insert the ends of your cotton into. The platform does float above the base of the deck and it wicks almost like a GTA-style deck. The only difference being is on most GTA style decks the wicking ports are open on one side, while on the OBS Engine, the wicking ports are fully closed. The juice feeds up through a cup style section into your cotton.

BUILDING AND WICKING:

Building it is pretty simple because it is a velocity style deck but you will be limited to the types of coils you can use on this deck. Wicking is very simple as well. Simply, put the cotton through your coil and tuck your ends into the wicking ports. The Engine wick is very similar to a GTA style tank. It’s a pretty simple deck to work with and even if you are new to building, you shouldn’t have a problem getting the OBS Engine up and run.

OBS Engine RTA Review

HOW DOES IT VAPE?

For months now, I’ve been watching the OBS Engine get hyped all over the internet. All I have been hearing is flavor for days and it doesn’t leak. Well, to be honest, I guess one out of two isn’t bad. The OBS Engine does not leak. Flavor for days? Yeah, I’m not too sure about that. While the flavor on the OBS Engine is okay and what I would call extremely middle of the road I definitely wouldn’t call the Engine a flavor tank. I can think of ten other tanks off the top of my head that have better flavor than the OBS Engine. I know this will probably not be a popular opinion but I have to be honest and write about my experiences. Your experience may be different but this is how I feel about this particular tank. I consider myself a TC flavor chaser and this tank just does not do it for me.

Whenever I would see one of those hype reviews, I always questioned it in the back of my mind because I know that in general, top airflow is just not conducive to great flavor. If you want to build a great flavor tank, the first place to start is bottom airflow. At the very least, it should have side airflow. Without one of those two features, it is extremely tough to build a flavor-chaser tank. I’m here to tell you that the OBS Engine does not qualify in my book as a flavor chaser tank.

I will say this about the OBS Engine, the flavor that I do get is fairly decent, however, I have noticed that sweeter, more fruity types of vapes do a lot better in this tank than other flavors. If I put a bakery or a custard in this tank, it just tastes bland. I’ve used juices in this tank that I know extremely well and I know that I am not getting the full flavor from potential out of them when I run them in the OBS Engine. I have also tried multiple builds and nothing I do seems to make the flavor pop like I have seen other reviewers talk about.

Right now, I have the OBS Engine sitting atop my Squid Industries Double Barrel mod. I have it running in power mode at 74 watts and I am ohming out at .2 ohms. The build I have in there is dual Twisted SS coils. The flavor I get is just okay. It is not flavor for days, and it really doesn’t outperform most of my other flavor-oriented tanks. The clouds I get are definitely on the anemic side, and unfortunately, that matches the flavor as well. It’s just an okay tank with okay clouds. That is the best way I can describe the OBS Engine.

WHAT WOULD HAVE MADE IT BETTER

  • Bigger lead terminals
  • Some sort of bottom airflow
  • Better notch system on the base
  • Conically designed barrel
  • Better machining on the interior base threading

CONCLUSION:

If you’re one of those vapers that worries about leaking more than you do flavor, then definitely go out and get yourself an Engine. I know that there are vapers in the community that absolutely hate leaky wet tanks. If that is one of your pet peeves then the OBS Engine will serve you well. If you are a flavor chaser and you are looking for phenomenal flavor, the Engine will not serve you well. In my opinion, there are a lot of other choices in this subcategory that beat the OBS Engine in flavor. It is a decent tank overall but it’s not all that and a bag of chips. After all the hype that I have seen for the OBS Engine I have to say that unfortunately, I have been severely disappointed in the vape quality of this tank. Does it live up to the hype? For me, unfortunately, the answer is no.

Vandy Vape Mesh RTA Intro

Vandy Vape is a relatively new in vaping industry, although they do have pedigree within their team from Geek Vape. However, it’s got to be said they are one of the most exciting manufacturers currently out there. Their readiness to try new ideas has not only made them stand out in a crowded market, but it is helping them steadily winning over supporters with each new release.

Vandy Vape is pushing the mesh atomizer category forward, and this time it’s an RTA they add to their armory.

Mesh might finally hit the mainstream

Vandy Vape Mesh RTA

A few years back when mesh wicks first made their appearance, it was unclear whether it was just a fad, or whether they would be the next best thing in vaping. However, they seemed to fizzle out, until recently. Now Vandy Vape has reimagined it as a heating element; it is once again becoming the buzzword.

Vandy Vape is now the first manufacturer to utilize mesh in an RTA. It is a brave choice for such a new brand, especially given the consensus around mesh as a heating element in general. However, it’s this original path of design that has helped drive their recent success.

The Mesh RTA is 24 mm in diameter. It has an average height of 39 mm and comes with a step-shaped pyrex glass. There is also an adapter in the kit to change the reservoir size from 2 ml (TPD Compliant) to the larger 4 ml capacity. The tank also features a slide-out top cap to make refilling easy and fuss-free.

The Mesh RTA has top airflow by design, where the air will direct down from the top inlets onto the mesh element. One would assume this is the only viable option with the airflow, as a mesh build and bottom airflow may have given a higher possibility of leaking issues. A wise choice by Vandy Vape to help minimize any challenges faced when wicking mesh coil builds.

The kit will include two variants of stainless steel mesh; one rated at 0.37 and the other 0.43 Ohms – both promising excellent flavor and vapor production. Also included are an Ultem and Delrin doc drip tip (with a 510 adapter).

Whether the Mesh RTA is a significant success or not, I’m glad Vandy Vape are taking bold decisions, and trying to reinvent the mesh medium. It could potentially spark a new era in rebuildable tank atomizers.

SMOK TFV8 X-Baby review

SMOK TV8 X-Baby

Dubbed the Baby Beast Brother, the TV8 X-Baby is the latest Sub Ohm tank from SMOK. Unlike the previous models SMOK have opted to make the switch to a top airflow design. The tank has a 4ml capacity, fully adjustable and comes with two coils and a replacement glass tube.

We’ve already covered quite a few versions of the Baby Tank so let’s have a good look to see how this one compares!

SMOK TFV8 X-Baby features

  • Stainless Steel Construction.
  • Diameter: 24.5mm.
  • Height: 39mm.
  • Weight: 58.5g.
  • Capacity: 4ml.
  • Top Filling Design.
  • Adjustable Top Airflow.
  • Standard 510 Connector.

What’s in the box?

  • 1x TFV8 X-Baby Tank.
  • 1x Q2 0.4ohm Dual Coil (Pre-Installed).
  • 1x M2 0.25ohm Dual Coil.
  • 1x Replacement Glass Tube.
  • Spare Parts.
  • User Manual.

SMOK TFV8 X-Baby styling and build quality

In my opinion this tank is very well put together and it feels nice and solid. The Stainless Steel construction is of a good standard and the anodized painted finish (we received the metallic red) looks seriously smart. The tank glass is reasonably thick and should an accident occur a replacement tube is included in the box. I felt the thick O-rings were well good and they hold the glass securely. This tank has a diameter of 24.5mm which is a bit of an oddity but I thought it looked great on my Therion 166 and there was no overhang at all.

What is interesting is that even though this tank has a capacity of 4ml the overall height of 39mm is relatively compact. Logos are kept to an absolute minimum with only the manufacturer name “SMOK” displayed in white lettering located on the airflow controller.

The drip tip is of the wide bore variety and made from Delrin. It is a good fit and feels comfortable on the lips when vaping. Keep in mind that you are pretty much stuck with it since it does not feature a standard 510 fitting. I did try my Half Moon Mod drip tips and while they do fit they are sadly far too loose to be used. Lastly the tank features a standard non-adjustable 510 pin.

Focus On www.urvapin.com For Best Vape Tanks.

Airflow

Airflow is very full on with this particular tank so it is ideal for anyone who prefers a direct lung inhale style of vaping. Closing the airflow down results in a restrictive lung inhale. Although you can kind of get away with an extremely loose mouth to lung vape if you heavily close down the airflow it doesn’t really suit that style of vaping in my opinion. This is a cloud chucking tank for those folks who love lots of airflow!

The airflow controller works well, being simple to adjust and it nicely stays in position.

Ease of use

Swapping out the coil is very simple since you only need to unscrew the base. Filling is equally straightforward and uses the trademark SMOK hinged top swing lid system. The filling hole isn’t massive so might present an issue if you still have dropper bottles lying around but there is plenty of room for all new TPD compliant 10ml PET bottles.

How does it vape?

I did initially wonder if the switch to top airflow would lead to some compromise on flavour with this tank but I am happy to report that was not the case. The flavour was really good considering just how airy the draw is and I think most people who like this style of vaping will be very happy with it.

If you live with other people who don’t like a lot of vapour around them then you are probably best avoiding this tank because it will land you in hot water. The TFV8 X-Baby puts out some very thick vapour so things tend to get foggy fast and even closing down the airflow doesn’t make that an enormous difference. Of course if you love clouds then you will really have a lot of fun with this tank but keep in mind it isn’t as ridiculous in terms of sheer cloud potential as the old TFV-4.

Typically I am not normally a fan of extremely airy atomizers but I found if I set the airflow to half open the vape was very enjoyable and since I liked the flavour I was getting I ended up running a few tanks worth of juice through it. I think what I really liked about his product was the fact that it felt very convenient to use. Max VG juice did present a slight problem since the wicking slots in the coil aren’t massive so you can find the vape occasionally borders on a dry hit. Providing you are using 70VG-80VG juice you shouldn’t have any serious issues it just depends on whether you chain vape as much as me.

As you would expect given the airflow the juice does drain extremely quickly so if you’re on a budget be warned. Thankfully this tank is 4ml capacity which does offset the problem slightly and filling is quick and easy thanks to the trademark SMOK hinged top design.

Conclusion

This is a seriously nice tank from SMOK which offers great flavour, excellent airflow and outstanding vapour production. The switch to a top airflow design is a welcome one in my opinion and reduces any chance of leaking.

The only real downside to the TFV8 X-Baby is that it literally devours your juice but that’s the price you really expect to pay with a design like this. Do check this tank out if you like the sound of it!

Many thanks to SMOK who kindly sent this product to Planet of the Vapes for us to review. SMOK have kindly provided us with a brand new TFV8 X-Baby to give away to one lucky winner.

Aspire Zelos 50W Kit With Nautilus 2 Review

Aspire is well known in the industry of vaping having released a number of successful kits in the past. But many say they are slightly behind in their innovation and their attempt to be one of the best box mod manufacturers available is somewhat behind. But now they are aiming at changing that view with the release of the Aspire Zelo kit, which promises to compete with the most advanced box mods on the market.

Aspire Zelos 50W Kit With Nautilus 2 Review

The Kit

The Aspire Zelos Kit with Nautilus 2 is made of high-quality zinc and aluminum alloy, they have obviously concentrated heavily on the look of this kit as we found it absolutely gorgeous to look at! The Kit is a compact 50W mod aimed at advanced and intermediate users looking for a light and small device for vaping on the go. This ergonomically designed device runs on a 2500mah high-drain built in battery and comes with a host of features such as temperature controls and various vaping effects that allow users to customize their vaping experience.

Available colors of the Zelos Kit

The Zelos Kit comes in standard packaging- a well-shaped device with black, red or grey color scheme as shown above and contains micro-USB upgrade/charging cable, a user manual and other informative leaflets. It might not be the most generous vaping kit, but it’s up there with the rest. It has everything that a vaper may need to have the best vaping experience.

Aspire Zelos Kit in Different Colors

This device measures 23mm X 128mm with a 2ml tank capacity and a 2500mah battary. The slim, elongated design feels very comfortable in hand, especially for people with tiny hands. Once you purchase the Aspire Zelos Kit with Nautilus 2, it will be your go-to device for long hikes and outings. It fits well in small pockets, and it’s so light that you won’t even feel it.

The Aspire Zelos Kit with Nautilus 2 is made of high-quality zinc and aluminum alloy, they have obviously concentrated heavily on the look of this kit as we found it absolutely gorgeous to look at!

The Hype

The Aspire Zelos Kit comes with the Nautilus 2 tank which was released slightly before the release of the kit. It has received really good feedback by vapers and a definte improvement to their previuos releases. But to us we thought they are trying to cater for 2 different types of vaper with one tank. That is it comes with 2 different coils, the pre-made 0.7-ohm coil for those sub ohm vapers amongst us and the 1.8 ohms (10-14W) BVC coil head to offer those vapers who still prefer to vape mouth to lung. The Nautilus 2 Tank in 3 colors with their coils  Now although this is good for new vapers, if like most box mod vapers you use sub ohm coils, the 1.8 coil is completely useless, why don’t they just offer an option to have a spare 0.7 coil instead?

Back to the tank; the bottom airflow (adjuster) allow you to control the airflow and as we like a huge flow of air we always have it wide open and were presently surprised with the flow, a real thumbs up from us on this! It has a top-fill design which keeps the tank easy to use and holds 2ml of juice, which is a little low but aimed at conforming with the European regulations…

The variable wattage and voltage settings are pretty easy to work out, we managed it without even looking at the instructions. It also has temperature control but this really is one of those features that a lot of box mods have but only a few use! But it’s nice that it’s there! One additional feature we haven’t seen is the ability to adjust the wattage under its TC mode. All these features coupled with its stylish design makes the Kit a pretty attractive box mod!

Pros

  • It has a solid and ergonomic design making it comfortable to hold in your hand.
  • It has a decent output of 50W and a powerful battery capacity of 2500mah.
  • This device has an automatic display adjustment.
  • It also has an easy top-fill design.
  • Different coil heads offer both mouth to lung and direct lung styles of vaping.
  • Precise airflow control.

Summary

Smart performance, portability and the look of the Zelos are three major factors that make this box mod really good and put Aspire back on the map as one of the leading and best e cig manufacturers. Packing a punch to a max 50W (most vapers vape at around 20-40W), its temperature control functions, and the option to upgrade its firmware makes this device not only versatile but also perfect for long trips away from a power source. Although many complain about the non use of an 18650 battery as experienced vapers have many of these as spares! Well-built from high-quality zinc and aluminum alloy for a sturdy and lightweight mod, the Aspire Zelos Kit with Nautilus 2 is the new sheriff in town.

HellVape Dead Rabbit RDA Review – This One Excels & Then Some

Is the Dead Rabbit the Ultimate Dripper and Squonking RDA?

We’re a little late to the RDA review party with the Dead Rabbit but it’s certainly been well received by both reviewers and the wider vape community.

Speaking of reviewers this is a project from popular US YouTube reviewer Heathen and manufacturer HellVape best known for the Trishul mech mods and RDA.

Heathen was one of the first YouTube reviewers I subscribed to and he really has gone from strength to strength – always liked his no BS honest reviews.

Anyway the Hellvape Dead Rabbit is a 24mm RDA that includes a squonk pin and comes in a variety of colours each with the option of a funky coloured 810 drip tip.

Incidentally the name Dead Rabbit hails from an Irish/American gang back in the 1850’s– think the movie Gangs of New York and you’ll get my drift.

I’m guessing the bunny ear styled posts on the deck follow this theme through

dead rabbit bunny ears

OK this was sent to me for the purpose of review and as always my thoughts and opinions are my own.

So has the Dead Rabbit RDA made me a very happy vaping bunny or given me a Watership Downer?

Let’s see how this one vapes…

Inside the Box

  • 1 x HellVape Dead Rabbit RDA
  • 1 x 810 colorful resin Drip tip
  • 1 x 510 adapter
  • 1 x Gold BF pin
  • 4 x Hex screws
  • 1 x Orings
  • 2 x Hex screwdrivers

dead rabbit box

Dead Rabbit RDA Specs

  • 24mm rda
  • Slide in top coil deck
  • Adjustable top side diagonal airflow
  • Single or dual coil configurations
  • Gold plated positive post
  • Knurled grip to adjust the airflow with ease
  • Bottom feeding pin included for squonking
  • Two 810 drip tip options and a 510 adapter
  • Slotted or hex head post screw options
  • Protruding 510 pin

Key Features

First up I have to say I absolutely love the raised two tone deck on the Dead Rabbit – especially those post holes.

As I have often mentioned I come unstuck all the time when it comes to trimming my coil legs on post less styles – however the design of this one means I’m a very happy bunny.

You simply drop the coil into the ample sized post holes and thanks to the open slots you can snip without the guesswork – excellent.

post holes dead rabbit

It can take a single or dual coil set-up – I used dual for both dripping and on the VandyVape Pulse BF mod in squonk mode.

Some might say there’s a slight dip in flavour and clouds on a single coil build – however I certainly didn’t notice to much of a change – if at all – on the Rabbit – but hey dual coils are more fun…sometimes

OK I’ve mentioned squonking and trust me of the half dozen or so RDAs I’ve squonked on the Dead Rabbit stands out by a mile – even better than the Digiflavor DROP which I love – more on the squonking action later.

dead rabbit violet

Another great feature and one I hope more companies will adopt – is offering the choice of a coloured drip tip.

That’s a little thing to some but it really does add a little something to the overall look of the RDA – yeah even the red one I got on top of the purple!

It’s a 24mm sitting flush on every single mod I’ve popped it on and doesn’t look lost on the larger ones either.

dead rabbit dripper

And a quick word about the juice well – it’s extremely deep – I think I read somewhere it’s around 5mm which for the drippers out there is great!

It features a top airflow but thanks to the angled cut-outs this acts more like a side airflow and I found little difference in vape quality from having my coils high or low on the deck.

Focus On www.ave40.com For More Vape Tank.

Design and Build Quality

I’ve never used a product from HellVape but if this is a standard of their work then I’m impressed.

The RDA is beautifully machined with the colour coating covering both inside and out and looks like it’s a paint job that will resist all but the hardest knocks.

The top cap is more domed than other drippers I’ve used and I’m guessing this is why this is such a flavoursome RDA!

comical dome top cap

As you can see I received the rather fetching purple version – and even though I’m usually a little annoyed by oversized logos I have to say and even in silver I love the Dead Rabbit image – if it’s not for you I believe blacked out versions are available!

I’ve already mentioned I love the design of the deck and from the side you can see even the post holes carry through the theme of the Rabbit with bunny ear shapes!

Overall it’s well put together – got a great deck and design wise even this grumpy old sod likes the look and logo – so how does it vape?

How Does the Hellvape Dead Rabbit RDA Perform?

I popped in a couple of very simple Clapton coils with a reading of 0.23ohms.

Wicking was easy enough but depending on how high you want your coils be prepared to use a little more cotton than you normally might.

As I’ve already said I found little difference in vape quality how high or low I had my coils – however it’s pretty obvious the closer to your mouthpiece the better the flavour.

In dual coil mode as a dripper I found this to be absolutely zinging the flavour off my tongue with plenty of thick clouds – a real wow moment once that cotton broke it – this thing really is a flavour chaser’s dream.

I can’t get over how smooth the vape is off the Dead Rabbit and even when I pushed my build to 79 watts I was getting a great hit but the vapour stayed smooth – not too warm and those clouds were dense!

Given some RDAs I’ve used in the past have become uncomfortably hot on the lips I was gobsmacked to chain vape on the Rabbit and whilst warming up it certainly didn’t get unbearably hot.

Squonking on the Dead Rabbit

Given I’m more of a squonker than a dripper this was the key for me – does the Dead Rabbit live up to the feedback I’ve seen on how it squonks?

One word – yes!

Oh Lord it’s in squonk mode when this RDA really kicks into life – for me anyway!

dead rabbit perfect squonker

The juice hits underneath the slightly raised peek insulator block meaning it channels the liquid out and to both sides giving both sets of wicks a good soaking.

The depth of the well means it’s rare if impossible to over-squonk and even when the pressure tries to suck the juice back into the bottle there’s still e-liquid left behind – make sure your wicks are on that deck!dead rabbit coil position

The only leakage I’ve got from this is leaving it on its side overnight and not once have I flooded it with overzealous squeezing of my squonker

So as both a dripper and a BF RDA this one excels and then some…

Awesome!

What I Like

I love the ease of build on this clever little deck and the peek insulator block works brilliantly channeling the juice in squonk mode.

I really like the design too – from the photos I thought the knurling on the top cap was a bit over the top but in the flesh it looks good as does the rabbit logo.

It can be used as a single coil however I reckon in dual coil the Rabbit hops into life delivering superb flavour and incredible clouds – don’t get me wrong single coilers will be more than happy.

What I Don’t Like

The O rings on the deck [on mine] to the barrel are a lot looser than I may have liked and two weeks in I feel now they’re lubed up they aren’t as tight as could be.

But hey that’s a nit-pick and they can easily be swapped out.

Another nit-pick is the lack of coils and cotton in the box – most of the newer RDAs out there do supply them – but again a very small moan as most of us have plenty of those to hand.

Final Verdict

Is the Hellvape Dead Rabbit the perfect all round RDA?

I reckon it is.

As I say all the time I’m not much of a dripper but squonking has brought me back to the RDA family and of the ones I’ve tried the Dead Rabbit is as close to the perfect BF RDA I’ve had the pleasure of using.

The squonk action is delightful and that channeling effect is really effective giving your wicks a consistent soaking.

To be honest after using this as a dripper I have spent more time doping that than any of the other newer RDAs in my collection – that says something – the flavour and clouds are exceptional!

Just buy one already!

VOOPOO DRAG 157W TC GENE CHIP BOX MOD REVIEW

Full In-depth Review of the VooPoo Drag

VooPoo DRAG 157W TC ModDon’t get hung up on the company’s name. Instead, focus on the product, because it’s worthy of your attention. In this review, we’re going to take a look at the Drag 157W TC box mod from VooPoo (you were warned about the name!). Given its rich set of features and powerful capabilities, we think it’s one of the best vape mods in its class and that you’ll be impressed enough to want to try it out for yourself. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at this new product with our VooPoo DRAG 157W TC Gene Chip Box Mod review.

Design

Let’s get the design out of the way up front. This is a relatively small device, powered by two 18650 batteries. It comes in only two color options, silver and black or silver and red. That’s a bit of a disappointment, of course, and I’ll always wonder why more companies don’t opt to give users a wider variety of design choices.

The VooPoo Drag from the topThis is one of the boxier designs to come out in recent years. While other products seem to have standardized the rounded-edge look, the Drag looks and feels like the box mod that it is. This hearkens back to the earlier days of the box mod craze, which gives it kind of a retro feel. And, as nice as high-tech and sporty designs might be, I’ve always appreciated the classics. This has that kind of design.

Focus On www.urvapin.com For More Best Vape mods.

The Mod

You will eventually have to get used to the company name, of course, as it is emblazoned on one side of the chassis, in small letters. It adds another classic touch to the design. The Drag logo is the largest identifier and appears on the battery door in large text. Overall, those logos feel right at home, and their placement does nothing to detract from the aesthetics.

The batteries are kept in place with magnets on the door. As I’ve said elsewhere, this is a feature that we really appreciate, and we hope that it becomes a standard for the industry. Unlike most latches and other door closings, the magnets can offer greater longevity without the wear and tear worries that often arise with inferior designs. Eventually, we suspect that magnets will be the option of choice for pretty much all of the best e cig products, well, where appropriate!Battery compartment on the VooPoo Drag

Features

There is also the standard USB port that you need for charging, and solid fire buttons and control buttons to manage device settings. Those settings offer the user flexibility that includes:

  • The ability to control the curve of the device’s wattage
  • The ability to control temperature curve
  • Smart wattage features that allow the Gene Fun chip to manage wattage based on coil resistance changes. That’s a great option to use when you want to protect new coils.
  • Wattage variability. You can get this feature by executing the firmware upgrade.

That chip also provides a host of security features that will protect you by ensuring a timeout when you’ve inhaled a certain amount of time, guard against excessive heat, and prevent overcharging, short-circuit, and other common dangers like those horror stories about vaping explosions which are just ridiculous by the way! These types of protections are often neglected in reviews of products like these, but they’re important features to learn about.

It’s important to note that this device also allows you the option of using a computer interface to customize settings for vaping and temperature curve. Rather than just use preset curves, you can create your own – simply by connecting your device to your computer and using the software provided with the Drag. That’s a really impressive feature, and should be attractive for hobbyists and those enthusiasts who are really selective about vape settings. It only works with Windows operating systems, though.

Overall

We really liked the boxiness of the devices. That’s something that you’ll have to decide for yourself, however it’s not really a mod for those who are looking to quit smoking through vaping, but for those who want to improve their vaping experience. The really important thing is that we were thrilled with all of our test runs with different builds. We managed to get consistent wattage at different temperature settings, and captured huge clouds. At the same time, we maintained flavor and had some of the best group vape sessions we’ve enjoyed in quite some time. Any box mod that can provide our test group with that kind of memorable experienced deserves a bucket of thumb-ups.
